  • The ABCs of a Daily Skincare Regimen

In a world inundated with skincare products and advice, choosing and sticking with a daily skincare regimen can feel overwhelming. From cleansers to serums, exfoliants to moisturizers, each promising miraculous results, it's no wonder that many of us find ourselves lost and confused.

At JAG Medical Spa, we understand the struggle of navigating the skincare market. That's why we're here to simplify the process and provide you with the ABCs of a beneficial and cost-effective daily skincare regimen.

A stands for Vitamin A Derivatives

A is for Vitamin A derivatives. Vitamin A derivatives fall within the Retinoid family. Retinoids help stimulate new skin cell turnover to reveal more youthful-looking skin; it is one of the best products for stimulating collagen production; it improves dark spots and pore size. Vitamin A derivatives, such as retinol, are powerhouse ingredients known for their anti-aging properties. These compounds help promote cell turnover, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture and tone. Incorporating a retinol-based product into your skincare routine can help combat signs of aging and keep your skin looking youthful and radiant. Note on Vitamin A in your daily skincare regimen: It reduces oil production, which can dry the skin. We recommend a good moisturizer along with it.

Retinol is available over the counter, but not at an effective concentration to promote the benefits mentioned above, so we highly recommend medical grade Retinol or Retin-A, otherwise known as Tretinoic acid. Tretinoin has been highly researched and used for decades. It has shown that continued and consistent use can slow the progression of aging. The best news is that the formulation is not very expensive and can be found for around $20 a month. This is one product we recommend you do not go without. It is important, however, to consult a physician or a skin care expert before starting since this can irritate the skin if not used properly.

B is for Vitamin B

B is for Vitamin B. Vitamin B, known as Niacinamide, can be placed on the skin and possesses anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for calming redness, soothing irritation, and alleviating conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is a versatile ingredient that offers a wide range of skincare benefits. From regulating oil production and minimizing pore size to reducing redness and inflammation, Niacinamide is a must-have for any skincare routine. It helps improve skin barrier function, resulting in a healthier, more resilient complexion.

It can help to soothe sensitive or compromised skin. This solution also typically has a great price point, so it’s a great addition to your daily skincare regimen.

C stands for Vitamin C

C is for Vitamin C. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals generated by environmental stressors like UV radiation and pollution. This helps to prevent oxidative damage to the skin, reducing the risk of premature aging and protecting against UV-induced photodamage. It also inhibits melanin production, helping to fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. In addition to its protective properties, vitamin C helps brighten skin tone and encourages collagen production for firmer, more youthful-looking skin. Incorporating a vitamin C serum into your daily skincare regimen can help boost radiance and enhance overall skin health.

Do’s and Don’ts of Your Daily Skincare Regimen

D is for the Do’s and Don’ts of a daily skincare regimen. This category may seem obvious, but it is one of the most important for maintaining youthful skin and preventing aging, so we also wanted to address this.

  • DO: Wear sunscreen daily or any time you are out in the sun. Sun damage is the most common cause of premature aging.
  • Don’t: Smoke or vape tobacco products. The chemicals in tobacco products promote accelerated aging in multiple ways, including overall heart and lung health.

Everything Else

E is for everything else, so we’ll cover a few of the extras you may have heard about regarding a daily skincare regimen. Fads with everything come and go, and skincare is no exception. You may have heard about a specific serum or product on social media, but it may not be right for your personal needs. So, let’s discuss a few more of our recommendations for your daily routine.

Daily moisturizing is encouraged both night and day. However, no clear data shows that one moisturizer is better than another. We just recommend using one that works for you, that isn’t expensive, and to develop a consistent regimen. At times, there may be a greater need for a stronger moisturizer, in which case a more medical-grade moisturizer may be necessary. Hyaluronic acid serums fall under the moisturizing category. Something to note: we recommend against them because some formulations have been shown to damage skin. Some of the medical-grade serums are effective but can be expensive, and in our professional opinions, the results simply are not worth the money.

Growth factors and peptides are not necessary for everyone, and we typically recommend them on a case–by–case basis due to both cost and to ensure the right product, such as Neocutis, is used to provide the best results.
